Voices of Petit: Andy Wallace

Dyson Racing's Andy Wallace has been coming to Road Atlanta since 1988 so he knows a little about what it takes to get around the 2.54-mile, 12-turn circuit in northeast Georgia. The jovial Brit also has been a constant at Petit Le Mans with a start in the first race in 1998 and an overall win with Panoz Motor Sports in 1999. In three weeks he will seek his second Petit victory by teaming with Butch Leitzinger and Andy Lally in Dyson's No. 16 Porsche RS Spyder. Today, he gives us his perspective of the event and the circuit.

Nothing 'Petit' about it:
"The field has gotten more and more competitive over the years. You have 14 prototypes but they are all covered within a small amount of time. So you'll have 1,000 Miles of punch-up. We all were hoping it would be a big event, obviously if it's going to be annually. But how it's really developed and how many people come to watch the race every year, it's fantastic. The grid is getting better, the spectators are getting better and the numbers are getting better. It's a great event."

He's a fan, too:
"It really doesn't matter where you watch from because it's such a nice track. There are fast turns and slow turns. If I'm not qualifying, I'll often walk around myself and watch. The elevation change I think is what makes it spectacular. If you go there you'll have a great time; it's as simple as that."

Getting around:
"Road Atlanta has a lot of fast corners. I particularly like Turn 1 where you just go down one gear and barrel up the hill. Even the chicane at the end of the straight is good. It's a small overtaking place, but nevertheless it's an overtaking place. It's a great track and always gets a good crowd."

The 10th running of Petit Le Mans, the annual 1,000-mile/10-hour endurance classic at Road Atlanta, is set for 11:15 a.m. ET on Saturday, October 6. SPEED will provide live coverage from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 6:30 to 10 p.m. American Le Mans Radio and IMSA's Live Timing and Scoring will be available at americanlemans.com.
