Gulf Radical Cup, Dubai: Top class racing expected as the championship battle rages

The Gulf Radical Cup is a Dubai based championship for Le Mans prototype style sports racing cars. The drivers, representing a wide range of nationalities, are all residents of the UAE and Bahrain. Featuring separate classes for the British built Radical SR8 (360bhp, 2.6 litre V8), SR5 (237bhp, 2 litre Honda Vtec), SR3 (252bhp, 1.5 litre Powertec) and PR6 (190bhp, 1.3 litre Powertec), these cars are driven by both experienced racers, such as British F3 graduate Salman Bin Rashid (Team 777) from Bahrain, as well as locally trained ‘gentlemen drivers’.

The Gulf Radical Cup is the region’s leading sports racing car series, and with five different winners from the previous eight rounds, the title is clearly up for grabs as we start the second half of the season. Bassam Kronfli (EVO Middle East) has a healthy points lead but will be under serious pressure this weekend from top Bahraini driver, Salman bin Rashid (Team 777).

However, up and coming Dutch karting champion Maurits Knopjes (Nivea for Men ARC Motorsport) will likely give both the favourites a hard time in his SR3. Interestingly, all three drivers have experienced race wins this year.

The popular Emirati driver, Mohammed Al Owais makes a rare appearance this weekend in the Alowais Motorsport Radical and could well provide a surprise or two as could a number of more experienced British drivers, including Radical World Cup graduate, John Stanley (Ardentia Search), and newcomer David Moran (DJ Racing).

Top 5 Championship Points Position after 6 Rounds:
1st  EVO Middle East    - 168
2nd  Team 777     - 138
3rd  Alowais Motorsport    - 121
4th  Nivea for Men ARC Motorsport  - 112
5th  GulfSport Racing   - 108
