With its clear break between bonnet and windscreen, Renault New Twingo joins the touring hatchback league. Renault New Twingo will be reaching new customer populations and opening up new markets.
The Dynamique and GT versions place the emphasis on Renault New Twingo's dynamic appeal. The design is racier and both versions come with a specific front bumper, while the foglamps are picked out by a satin grey surround. These two variants of Renault New Twingo feature a more assertive demeanour for a car in this segment, an impression reinforced by the gloss black headlamp masks and satin grey exterior mirror housings.
According to version, the rear bumper houses rear parking proximity sensors and includes protective beading. The GT version of Renault New Twingo is distinguishable by its aluminium-finish rear spoiler and chrome exhaust tailpipe.
Renault New Twingo – compact and agile
City driving calls for compactness and agility. Renault New Twingo measures 3,600mm long by 1,654mm making it ideal for an urban environment. The extra 170mm in length that sets it apart from its predecessor have been employed to provide additional safety performance and cabin space without detracting from the car’s main objective, which is to remain easy to control in all circumstances, with a small turning-circle diameter (between kerbs) of 9,85m (depending on version and wheel size).
Reassuring roadholding
Renault New Twingo is an easy-to-drive car with highly reassuring response. Design priorities for vehicle handling were on safety, poise and comfort. The chassis is superbly manoeuvrable in town yet reassuring for long journeys on the open road.
MacPherson-type front suspension features hydraulic dampers, coil springs and an anti-roll bar, the diameter of which is 25mm on models powered by the 1.2 60hp engine and 26mm on all other versions. The suspension tuning has been optimized for even better roadholding and comfort, while the chassis makes a significant contribution to Renault New Twingo's versatility and dynamism.
The programmed deflection H-beam rear suspension is compact and lightweight. For travelling comfort and the effective suppression of vibrations, it comes with vertically-mounted dampers and variable-rate coil springs with rubber bushes at each end to minimize transmission of vibration to the body shell. The diameter of the rear anti-roll bar is 22.5mm, except for models powered by the 1.2 60hp engine (19.3mm).
Vigorous, environment-conscious engines
From initial release, Renault New Twingo comes with a broad choice of engines, including a high-performance petrol unit and a diesel engine There are three petrol engines: 1.2 60hp (43kW), 1.2 16V 75hp (56kW), and the brand new TCE 100hp (74kW), all of which incorporate the On Board Diagnostic system for lasting efficiency of the emission control equipment.
Renault New Twingo can also be ordered with the 1.5 dCi 65hp (47kW) diesel engine, an important addition since one in five A-segment cars sold in Europe are diesel-powered.
All four engines are economical to run and respectful of the environment. All Renault New Twingo versions, even the most powerful, emit under 140g of CO2 per km, with the diesel version emitting just 113g. All Renault New Twingo engines comply with Euro4 emission standards.
The flexible mountings that link the suspension to the body play a key role in striking the ideal balance between the car’s vibration-suppression performance (for comfort) and stiffness (roadholding). On Renault New Twingo, special attention has been paid to these mountings, which combine a rubber honeycomb construction for effective vibration filtering plus a special rigid shoulder for enhanced roadholding. Renault New Twingo comes with 14” tyres in two widths (165 and 175mm), or with 15” tyres 185mm wide on Initiale and GT versions.
More assertive response for GT version
Special attention has gone into engineering of the GT version’s chassis, with a view to providing both outstanding dynamic performance and a high degree of comfort. The suspension arms are equipped with stiffer bushes for extra cornering stability, while the upper strut bushes ensure enhanced steering performance and precision. For truer body support, the front shock absorbers feature pressurization technology. Renault New Twingo GT also comes with bespoke power-steering settings for extra dynamism
and driving pleasure.
1.2 8V 60hp (43kW)
The acclaimed D7F 8-valve 1.2 petrol engine that previously powered Twingo boasts maximum power of 60hp (43kW) at 5,250rpm and maximum torque of 93Nm (9.5mkg) at 2,500rpm. Its robustness meets the demand of customers looking for a vehicle that is inexpensive to run and maintain. On Renault New Twingo, settings have been optimized to offer extra torque and lower fuel consumption. Long staging of the JB1 five-speed gearbox further improves fuel economy, with consumption of 5.6l per 100km (132g/km of CO2).
1.2 16V 75hp (56kW)
The 1,149cc 1.2 16V (D4F) engine delivers 75hp (56kW) at 5,500rpm and torque of 107Nm (11mkg) at 4,250rpm. Particularly responsive at low revs, its idling speed of just 650rpm contributes to lower fuel consumption. Renault New Twingo is coupled with either the JB1 five-speed manual gearbox or the JH1 automated manual transmission. The Quickshift 5 automated manual transmission is based on a manual gearbox fitted with an electrohydraulic actuator. It has two modes: automatic (with no driver action required) or manual (with flickshift control). As well as providing automated gearshift capabilities at low additional cost, the Quickshift system also improves fuel economy by around 3%. With this engine, Renault New Twingo emits no more than 135g of CO2 per km, with consumption at 5.6l per 100km with the Quickshift transmission and 5.7l per 100km with the manual gearbox.
TCE 100hp (74kW)
Renault New Twingo joins Clio III and Modus as the latest recipient of the new TCE 100hp (turbo control efficiency) petrol engine, one of the GT version’s exclusive features. In addition to its punchy performance, it combines the fuel consumption of a 1.2-liter motor with the power of a 1.4-liter powerplant and the torque of a 1.6-liter engine. The TCE 100hp is based on the 1.2 16V 75hp block (with which it shares 70% of its parts) and is equipped with a low inertia turbo that minimizes lag thanks its small diameter turbine and compressor. Maximum power is 100hp (74kW) at 5,500rpm, while maximum torque (145Nm) is available at 3,000rpm. The combination of its small size and low inertia turbo ensures feisty performance from low revs, while maximum torque is available from very low down and across a particularly broad rev band. The turbo comes with an 'overpower' function that enables drivers to benefit from a temporary power and torque increase of 5hp and 6Nm respectively in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears at engine speeds of over 4,500rpm.
Advanced technology and contained size ensure the lowest combined-cycle fuel consumption for a 100hp petrol engine (5.9l per 100km and 140g of CO2 per km), as well as maximum driver appeal. With a standstill to 100km/h time of just 9.8 seconds, the TCE 100hp delivers best-in-class performance.
1.5 dCi 65hp (47kW)
Unlike its predecessor, Renault New Twingo is also available with diesel power. The 1.5 dCi (K9K) engine will be available from launch and is identical to the existing
Clio III, Modus and Kangoo powerplant. Widely acclaimed for its efficiency and acoustic performance, it is equipped with a second-generation fuel injection system. This 1,461cc engine delivers 65hp at 3,750rpm and boasts torque of 160Nm (16.3mkg) at 1,900rpm. The 1.5 dCi combines response from very low revs and particularly low fuel consumption of 4.3l per 100km, with equally low CO2.emissions of just 113g/km.
Renault New Twingo is easy to handle, with safe, sound reactions
According to version, Renault New Twingo is equipped with two to six airbags: two front airbags, two thorax airbags and two curtain airbags. For the first time at Renault, the passenger airbag is of the ‘3D’ type. When deployed, its form and volume are optimized to spread out the load between the passenger's head and thorax. To minimize damage to the groin area under frontal impact, the front Seat cushions are equipped with an anti-submarining system, while the independent rear seats benefit from a profiled Seat cushion. Renault New Twingo’s sill and door beam spread forces over the full length of the car to provide maximum passenger protection, ensuring that
the cabin serves as a safety cell. The lateral airbags (according to version) also play a big part in the safety of occupants in the event of side impacts.
