They might be about to make one of the most talked about comebacks of all time, but the Spice Girls will have their work cut out if they’re to match Vauxhall’s achievement of two number ones in a row...

Following on from its best June in over a decade, Vauxhall has once again achieved top spot in the UK best-seller market, and by quite some margin.

Outselling its closest rival by a massive 3,405 cars, the Luton-based manufacturer sold 26,720 cars in July – and four of the top seven cars on sale in Britain wore Vauxhall badges.

What’s more, the position was strengthened thanks to massive popularity with retail customers – as well as heading up the UK’s overall sales, which include fleet registrations, Vauxhall was by far and away the leading brand for retail buyers, with sales 33 per cent higher than the nearest competitor.

Vauxhall’s top performer was the stylish New Corsa, which achieved 7,882 sales, more than 56 per cent of which were to retail buyers. Zafira and Vectra were also the best-selling cars in their respective sectors, proving that Vauxhall is still the number one choice for family motorists who value stylish design and driving dynamics just as much as they do flexibility.

Vauxhall sales in the UK accounted for 15.16 per cent of the total car market last month, an impressive growth compared to 13.65 per cent in July 2006; while overall in 2007 the company has achieved 14.08 per cent of the entire car market – a significant increase on 2006.

Welcoming the news, Vauxhall’s managing director, Bill Parfitt, said: “The fact that we are doing so well at a retail level shows that Vauxhall has a genuinely desirable product range of which we can be rightly proud. With New Corsa doing so well and exciting new niche models such as Antara and Astra Twin Top added to our portfolio, we are seeing some very exciting results.”
