Alfa Romeo steps up a gear with new Q-Tronic gearbox

24 ottobre 2007

Drivers of Alfa Romeo’s Brera, 159 and Spider models can take it easy with the introduction of an intelligent Q-Tronic automatic gearbox system mated to 1.9 JTDM, 2.4 JTDM and 3.2 JTS V6 powerplants.

Combining the convenience of an automatic with the driver involvement of a manual, this advanced and practical system does away with the need for a clutch pedal, and gives the driver the flexibility to choose between a manual mode with lever gearchange or a traditional automatic mode.  A Sport and Winter function is also available along with some ‘under the skin’ technology to keep the occupants safe.

In manual mode, the driver maintains full control of the gear change by using the sequential gear lever, which can be flicked forwards or backwards to change up or down.  For driver comfort and safety, the onboard computers will override gear changes in relation to engine rpm or when the vehicle is cornering.

Alfa’s Q-Tronic makes hill starts easy with the intelligent system sensing uphill and downhill gradients and selecting the correct gear for the road conditions and engine speed.

When the Sport / Winter button by the gearlever is pressed, the ECU sets a higher rpm gearchange – with longer sequences between gearshifts – for a more sporty and engaging drive.   Hold the button down longer and the Winter function is engaged.  In this mode, maximum grip is guaranteed to cope with snow or icy road conditions.

NEW 2.4 JTDM 210BHP ENGINE

The first new 210bhp versions of Alfa’s 2.4 JTDM are already available on the Alfa Brera and 159 models.  Boosted by 10bhp over the outgoing engines, the new unit delivers a massive 294 lb ft of torque at just 1500rpm.  The Alfa 159 2.4 JTDM saloon can accelerate from rest to 60mph in just 8.4 seconds (8.6 seconds for the Sportwagon) before reaching a new top speed of 140mph for the saloon and 139mph for the Sportwagon.

The additional 10bhp helps launch the Alfa Brera from a standstill to 60mph in 7.9 seconds and takes it to a new top speed of 143mph.  The increase in power comes with no sacrifice in terms of fuel economy.
