International Engine of the Year now available across Bmw 3 Series family as 335i Touring arrives

25 febbraio 2008

The new 335i Touring completes a full house for the award-winning Twin Turbo High Precision Injection engine in the 3 Series family.
The 3.0-litre engine, with its impressive 225 kW power output and muscular 400 Nm of torque is now available in the shapely and sporting 3 Series Touring, joining the 335i Sedan, Coupé and Convertible variants.

Up to now, the 323i Touring has been the sole model in the range, but for 2008, BMW is adding the 335i engine as well as two four-cylinder 320i-powered models, the 320i Touring and the 320i Executive Touring.

The range extension reflects the growing popularity of the Touring derivative, with 166 units sold in 2007, significantly higher than in previous times.

Developed in tandem with the sedan version, the Touring embodies all the elements that make the BMW 3 Series a dominant force not just in the Australian luxury car market, but also overseas where it is sold in record-breaking numbers.

The BMW 3 Series Touring offers a remarkable combination of driving dynamics, safety, passenger comfort and impressive versatility in a car that is larger than its predecessor E46 generation car in every way, yet actually weighs less.

"With these new models we expect to further drive and grow the market for practical and sporty 3 Series Touring models in Australia," said Tom Noble, General Manager Marketing, BMW Group Australia.

"Customers looking for increased practicality and a dynamic driving experience to match their lifestyle will look no further than the new BMW 3 Series Touring range," he said.

BMW will stamp its authority on the high-performance estate market with the top-of-the-range six-cylinder Twin Turbo 335i Touring.

At the volume end of the segment, the new 320i Touring will give customers a more dynamic product offering at its price point than the competition.

The new BMW 335i Touring scorches from zero to 100km/h in a blistering 5.9 seconds and is capable of a top speed of 250km/h (where legal).

The eye-watering power making this possible comes from BMW's new 225 kW all-aluminium 3.0-litre twin-turbo engine that produces lag-free acceleration and the sort of mid-range responses that come from a mountainous torque of 400Nm delivered across a broad rev range covering 1,300 rpm - 5,000 rpm.

At the same time, with the help of high-pressure direct-injection technology, the twin-turbo 3.0-litre returns the fuel economy of a much smaller engine (9.8 litres per 100 km on the combined cycle).

BMW's market leadership in the field of engine construction is confirmed with the new Twin Turbo engine picking up the 2007 “International Engine of the Year Award” along with “Best New Engine of the Year" accolade.

For all this, the new 335i Touring is eminently practical with the ability to Seat five occupants in luxurious comfort while providing a generous luggage area that is accessed via a tailgate with separately opening rear window.

The 335i Touring comes equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission including gear shift paddles on the steering wheel.

The 320i Touring is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine featuring BMW’s VALVETRONIC engine management system as well as double-VANOS on the intake and outlet side resulting in outstanding power and performance.

The engine develops maximum output of 115 kW at 6,400 rpm, with maximum torque of 200 Nm at 3,600 rpm.

Accelerating from 0-100km/h in 9.3 seconds, the 320i Touring is quicker than its immediate entry-level competitors. Fuel consumption in the composite EU cycle is 8.0 litres per 100km.

Like the 323i Touring, the new 320i Touring is available with the choice of six-speed manual gearbox, or optional six-speed Steptronic automatic.

Equipment and specification levels for all BMW 3 Series Touring models are based on the equivalent 3 Series Sedan, with the addition of roof rails and Luggage Compartment Package.

The comprehensive list of standard equipment for the BMW 320i Touring includes split-fold rear seats with height adjustable rear headrests and third 3-point rear seatbelt, multi-function leather steering wheel, 16-inch wheels with 205/55 R16 tyres, roof rails, warning triangle with first-aid kit, anti-dazzle interior rear view mirror, comfort access system, rear Park Distance Control, rain sensor and automatic headlights, automatic climate control with micro filter, cruise control, Bluetooth interface preparation, AM/FM radio with in-dash CD player, front side airbags and head airbags for front and rear passengers, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and tailgate with separately opening rear window.

The Executive package for the BMW 320i Touring adds Dakota leather upholstery, front fog lights, partial electric Seat adjustment, fine wood trim (or aluminium as a no cost option), 16-inch double-spoke alloy wheels and extended lights package.

The standard equipment level for the new 335i Touring is of the highest order.

Over the 323i Touring, the top-of-the-range model adds standard six-speed automatic Steptronic transmission and gear shift paddles on the steering wheel, front and rear Park Distance Control, 17-inch star-spoke alloy wheels, adaptive headlights, Bi-Xenon headlights including headlight washer system, high beam assist, 8.8-inch control display colour monitor with Professional Navigation, TV tuner and voice control, 10 speaker Hi-Fi speaker system, electric lumbar support for driver and front passenger, CD-changer, and electric Seat adjustment with memory function for driver’s seat.

With the arrival of the new 335i Touring and 320i Touring all models, including the 323i Touring, will incorporate a luggage compartment package, further increasing the high standard of practicality. Included in the package is a removable watertight folding box, reversible liner with integrated protective cover, dividable storage compartment underneath the luggage compartment floor and luggage compartment nets.

All new 3 Series Touring models benefit from the convenience of keyless access and keyless engine start thanks to the smooth-edged remote key and standard Comfort Access.

Customers wishing to add some additional sporting flair can personalise their BMW 3 Series Touring with the M Sport Package, which adds M aerodynamic package, 17-inch double spoke M light-alloy wheels, sports seats, M sport suspension, M multi-function sport steering wheel, anthracite headlining, M door sills and Aluminium Glacier Silver trim.
