"We have a magnificent team in place, which has allowed us to achieve an amazing record since 2002. Our drivers, team managers and our General Motors Gen III, 6.0 liter base motor has made the UMI Racing team a contender among a very talented group of drivers," said Scott Urshel, president of UMI Racing.
UMI Racing GM powered BFGoodrich Chevrolet Silverado used the General Motors Gen III, 6.0 liter motor, the same base engine that consumers will find in the H2 Hummer and the Cadillac Escalade. UMI Racing modifies the motor with proprietary engineering, parts and electronic calibration, enabling the truck to achieve over 500 horsepower and maintain the durability required to finish a long and challenging race of this caliber. "Our trucks finish the race because of the modifications we've instituted. Even when pitted against motors that have 200 more horsepower than we do, we finish the race and finish first, even through some of Baja's roughest terrain," said Urshel. The modifications that UMI Racing has made in the motor that allows the truck to travel at 120 Miles per hour for 16 hours even in the desert heat.
UMI Racing develops unique products and streamlined procedures that keep the trucks on the road and is responsible for UMI Racings' success. Team manager, Don Tebbe recently implemented an unprecedented refueling technique that had never been used at the Tecate Score Baja 1000 to date. He developed an on-road refueling system that didn't require the truck to stop for refueling, saving precious time.
"We have been very fortunate, the first motor I developed won its first race, now we've got quite a history of wins under our belt -- this is just the beginning," said Urshel.
