Mechanical Failure Robs David Martinez of a Top Five Finish in Mexico

12 novembre 2007

In only his third Champ Car start, Mexican driver David Martinez was on his way to a top five finish today at the Gran Premio Tecate presented by Banamex when a mechanical failure forced him to pit and lose six laps.

Starting from the tenth position on the grid Martinez immediately began to pick up spots on the track and by lap 21 he was already fifth.  Martinez continued lapping at a very competitive pace and was on his way to his best Champ Car finish until a gearbox failure in his #7 INDECK/Axtel/Tecate Champ Car on lap 45 ruined his day.  Despite of al the problems Martinez still managed to show his speed by turning the second quickest lap of the race with a time of 1m26.006s.

Finished 14th

“I’m actually really happy, we didn’t achieve the result that we wanted but I think that we showed that we can fight up front and that if I have the chance to race all year I will be able to contest for victories.  Obviously what happened was very disappointing but there’s no point on worrying about what’s outside your control.  I gave everything I had and I think people noticed that.

The Forsythe Team gave me a great car, especially when we put on the Red Bridgestone Potenzas I was a lot faster than the cars around me.  It’s a shame because I think that I would’ve been able to put on a good show for the Mexican fans that came here to support me today.  I have to thank Axtel and Tecate for believing in me and for being with me all weekend, I’m very proud to carry their brands.”
