Scania says its new Euro 5 engine breaks a mould, confounding sceptics who said it would be impossible to hit Euro 5 emission levels without combining exhaust gas recirculation and selective catalytic reduction.  

Jonas Hofstedt, in charge of engine development for the firm, says the new engine gives "excellent fuel economy," comparable with Euro 3 engines of similar output. The engine also delivers "exceptional torque" at low speeds.  

A triple-pulse injection system, delivering fuel at 2,400 bar and variable geometry turbocharger, help scavenge unburt fuel. Hofstedt said that the same technology will spread to other engines in the Scania range.
