Double world champion and former DTM competitor Mika Hakkinen at Monaco confirmed that his days as a professional race driver are over.

"When I watch the cars going around, I don't feel like I have to be doing it any more," the 39-year-old Finn, at the circuit for a Johnnie Walker sponsor appearance, said.

Also spotted in the paddock on Saturday was former four time world champion and team owner, Alain Prost, 1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve, and former grand prix winner Johnny Herbert.

A visibly elated Felipe Massa said he couldn't believe he snared pole position at Monaco, but Nick Heidfeld was equally surprised - but much less impressed - about his 13th grid spot, after demonstrating pace a full second slower than his on-form BMW teammate Robert Kubica.

"I am very disappointed," the German said. "I can't even remember the last time I was not in the top ten and now we have to find out why."
