Teams fail to agree to delay KERS until 2010

04 agosto 2008

Another attempt by formula one teams to call off the scheduled introduction of KERS has failed.

Bosses of all ten teams met in Sunday in the Toyota motor home, where the hottest topic was the controversial energy-recovery technology.

Not only have some teams been experiencing problems in their development of KERS systems for 2009, chiefs including Renault's Flavio Briatore believe the implementation would be considerably cheaper if the technology is delayed for another full year.

In fact, in the Hungaroring paddock on Sunday, six of the ten teams voted to establish a gentleman's agreement to voluntarily delay racing KERS-equipped cars until 2010.

There is nothing the FIA could do to compel teams to run KERS systems next year, as using the technology in 2009 is not mandatory.

According to the new FOTA alliance of teams, however, it is understood that a majority of seven out of ten votes is necessary for decisions to go through.

It is believed that Williams and BMW-Sauber - despite the latter team encountering an electrocution issue with a KERS-equipped car at a recent test - are the most stridently committed to the technology for 2009.

McLaren and Honda, meanwhile, are believed to have also voted to race ahead with KERS technology in 2009.
