Berlin says no to F1 street race

23 agosto 2008

The mayor of Berlin has ensured speculation about a possible street race in the German capital is short lived.

Klaus Wowereit on Friday told the city's Morgenpost newspaper that - despite the inaugural goings-on on the streets of Valencia this weekend and the other similar F1 urban circuits in Monaco, Montreal, Melbourne and Singapore - Berlin is not about to join the action.

"There were some thoughts, but we said no," the governing mayor is quoted as saying.

Nevertheless, F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone on Friday told the Spanish newspaper El Mundo that "five" potential hosts are currently waiting in line to join the annual grand prix schedule.
