Kimi-Felipe: boss says Ferrari decision looming

09 settembre 2008

Felipe Massa on Sunday further strengthened his championship position, but Ferrari is still not ready to formally declare a number one driver for the final five races of 2008.

Mathematically, the recipient of the Italian team's full resources is now a no-brainer, after the controversy of the Belgian grand prix pulled Massa to within 2 points of Lewis Hamilton's championship lead.

Reigning world champion Kimi Raikkonen, in contrast, is now nearly 20 points behind Hamilton, as his shunt into the Spa-Francorchamps wall puts him also in arrears of BMW's Robert Kubica in the drivers' chase.

"I don't know. You are asking the question to the wrong guy," Brazil's Massa told reporters before leaving Belgium.

Certainly as Sunday's race began, Raikkonen was in no mood to fall in line behind his teammate's title bid.

"We almost touched wheel to wheel," a bemused Massa told reporters on Sunday, recalling the "strange" moment at the start of the race when Raikkonen pushed the sister car almost to the grass verge.

Raikkonen admitted he tackled Spa-Francorchamps, his favourite circuit, with a "win or lose" mentality as he struggled to get back into the title fight.

Given the outcome of the race, however, the Finn still seems reluctant to pledge his efforts to the occupant of the other Ferrari.

"It is not up to me if he wins or not," he said afterwards. "I try to win races and we will see what happens."

Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali admits a decision will soon be taken.

"We will take the decision in the team interests," he said in Belgium. "It is something we need to think about with no rush."
