Gerhard Berger denies making Red Bull demands

27 settembre 2008

Gerhard Berger has played down reports that he has urged Red Bull mogul Dietrich Mateschitz to increase his support for the Toro Rosso team.

Billionaire Mateschitz earlier this year vowed to sell his 50 per cent stake in Toro Rosso, the secondary Red Bull team that nonetheless recorded the energy drink company's first grand prix victory at Monza two weeks ago.

But amid the customer car uncertainty and STR's clouded future, team co-owner Berger is quoted by an Italian magazine as insisting Mateschitz pledge more money.

"I read that too," the former grand prix winner told F1's official website. "I cannot demand anything. In the end I - and we - are happy with what we get.

"We try to work around what we get. I also read that if we want to move to the next step we would need more money. Well, that is clear. But there have been no demands," Berger added.

The Austrian said Sebastian Vettel's Monza win from pole position effectively changes nothing for Toro Rosso.

"I got a lot of emails and text messages congratulating us for this win, but I have not received a big cheque so far," he said.
