Andreas Zuber increase points tally at Silverstone

07 luglio 2008

Andreas Zuber, who races under a UAE license for Piquet Sports had every reason to be optimistic for Silverstone: "I feel quite at home on this circuit. I simply love the combination of fast turns. It is really a lot of fun driving here. I had a good race here last year from start to finish scoring 14 points over the weekend! Silverstone is a quick track, so strategy is important. The track was dry on Friday morning but the temperature was really cool at around 17 degrees Centigrade. Firstly, after coming out with the first drivers to be on the track, I was sixth in the Friday morning session (1.28.062). After eight laps I came back to the pits and the team made some adjustments in view of qualifying; my goal was to qualify in the top three or at the worst on the front two rows.

The half hour of qualifying was very tough. I focused and was feeling confident after five laps I was third fastest with a time of 1.27.625. I came back to the pits on lap seven. I saw on the data that my car was as fast as Grosjean's and I went back again for more adjustments and fine-tuning but did not go out again since Rodriguez spun. In a way, I was not disappointed starting from second row even if I wanted a fantastic result. After qualifying, there was a working session with the team to evaluate all the data, since I was more determined than ever to finish on the podium. I was confident because car was better during qualifying than in morning. I was just a bit worried about tyres during the race.

In the first race I needed a great start but I lost a few places as I felt Grosjean and Pantano on my side and I had to move to avoid a crash and only came out fifth. I was up to fourth before I went off track at turn five but I managed to recover and made my pit stop fairly early. After my stop I was back in eleventh and I started working my way up the order. My tyres were getting quite worn but I still made it up to seventh and took two points which made my season total 19. I had plenty to look forward to for race two as I started from the second row again.”

But Andreas Zuber's start did not go as well as he wanted as his engine cut out on the grid. Later he lost time at the start when Romain Grosjean ran into him in the first corner destroying the left side of his car. Zuber had to make a stop for repairs and got going again from 17th position.

Andreas Zuber explains: "I finished in 11th position. I just could not move up from where I was when I restarted after repairing the side and the left suspension. The tyres had no grip today. Towards the end of the race, it was in very heavy rain especially at Stowe with a lot of spray on the track. I spun slightly in the first turn, but at least I was able to bring the car to the chequered flag under these difficult conditions. Luckily, there was no safety car interrupting the wet race despite Soucek's impressive accident. But what a difficult first GP2 series wet race of the season.

Let's see what Hockenheim brings. It's kind of a home race. Qualifying should be positive and that will be good for my race."
