Racing Engineering - GP2 Belgium preview

The GP2 series begins this weekend its frantic final sprint which, in only seven days, will, with the two events in Belgium and Italy that close the 2008 season taking place on consecutive weekends, decide the result of the Championship. Racing Engineering reaches this decisive moment of the year with its driver Giorgio Pantano leading the overall classification and with Javier Villa back in form after having scored points in the last three race weekends, which has contributed to the Spanish team remaining in the fight for the Team Championship, in which it’s only ten points behind the leader.

Giorgio arrives at Spa as the hot favourite for the title as he currently has a 13 lead over his closest pursuer, the Brazilian Bruno Senna, and with the added advantage of the last date of the year being held at Monza, a track where the Italian driver has won in all the categories in which he has taken part. After increasing his lead at the top of the table in Valencia, the driver of the Spanish team expects to further consolidate his position on the demanding Belgian track this weekend, for which he will rely on the competitiveness and reliability of the Repsol and Telefónica backed Dallara number 12 which, with its excellent level of preparation, has allowed him to show his full talent throughout the season.

Javier, for his part, will try to continue at the Ardennes circuit the progression showed in the second half of season, fighting against the best in the category. After scoring points consecutively in Germany, Hungary and Valencia, the young Spaniard expects to follow his climb in the classification on a track that he especially likes.

The historic Belgian track is, every year, one of the most anticipated appointments for the drivers given its unique combination of all kinds of corners that present the greatest driving challenge of the whole championship. The famous Raidillon, the rapid Blanchimont, the complicated Pouhon or the tight La Source hairpin form a part of a track that has kept its soul virtually intact in spite of the different remodelling suffered throughout the years. At this special scene Racing Engineering expects to continue adding successes to its excellent 2008 season, and to take one more step nearer its aim of clinching the championship. This is a goal for which all the members of Spanish team have been working hard since the beginning of the season and that is, every time, closer to being achieved.
