Junqueira & Moraes Manufacture Top 10 Qualifying Spots

26 luglio 2008

Bruno Junqueira and Mario Moraes gave Dale Coyne Racing its best starting positions this season as Junqueira qualified seventh and Moraes tenth for Saturday’s running of the Rexall Edmonton Indy on the 1.973-mile, 14-turn airport road course.

In Segment One of the Firestone Fast Six qualifying, each group receives 20 minutes of track time.  The fastest six cars from each group advance to Segment Two.  During Segment Two, the 12 advancing cars receive 15 minutes of track time.  The fastest six advance to the Firestone Fast Six Shootout while the remaining six cars are ranked in positions 7-12 based on their fastest laps.

After posting the sixth fastest qualifying speed in the first group in first round qualifying Friday afternoon, Junqueira ran in the sixth position until the final seconds of the second round when Ryan Briscoe bumped Junqueira's No. 18 Z-Line Designs car for the final spot.  Junqueira qualified a season-best seventh.  His previous best was ninth at Richmond and Mid-Ohio.

This comes after Junqueira damaged his car in practice Thursday afternoon.  The 31-year-old Brazilian spun coming out of turn four.  The car lifted two feet off the ground cracking the tub in the process.

The Dale Coyne Racing team showed how determination could pay off as they stayed until 5:00 a.m. early Saturday morning converting the back-up car, which was set-up for an oval track to a road course set up in order to get Junqueira ready for practice and qualifying.

“I’m happy with qualifying seventh today, which is the best we have qualified this season,” said Junqueira.  “After crashing the car in practice yesterday I wish I could have given the team a pole for their great effort they put into fixing car.  The crew stayed until five in the morning working on the car.  Hopefully we will have a great result in the race on Saturday.”

Moraes was the second fastest in the second group in first round qualifying and seemed headed for a spot in the Firestone Fast Six.  But with three minutes to go in the second round session, the 19-year-old rookie was working on what would have been his fastest lap of the day when his No. 19 Sonny's Bar-B-Q car spun into the tire barriers in turn eight ending his day.  Moraes qualified a season-best 10th.  His previous best was 13th at Watkins Glen.

“We have a fast car and it showed today,” said Moraes.  “I’m disappointed about how things ended, but I’m happy with a tenth starting spot.  I was trying to push too hard and spun coming out of the turn.  I’m pretty sure we would have made the Firestone Fast Six if that didn’t happen.”

Team owner Dale Coyne was very pleased with today’s outcome.  “I am very proud of the qualifying performances of both Bruno and Mario today,” said Coyne.  “The team worked hard to get here and for both cars to show top-10 performances are a great reward for their hard work this weekend.”

The IndyCar® Series will be back on the track Saturday, July 26 at 11:55 a.m. (EDT) for a final 30-minute practice session before the green flag drops for the Rexall Edmonton Indy at 5 p.m. (EDT).  The race can be seen live on ESPN.
