Arduous Day North of the Boarder for Dale Coyne Racing

28 luglio 2008

Bruno Junqueira, who started a season-best seventh, appeared headed for a sixth-place finish with four laps remaining in the Rexall Edmonton Indy race Saturday afternoon.

However, that scenario did not play out because a sensor malfunctioned on Junqueira’s No. 18 Z-Line Designs car, locking the car permanently into sixth gear.  Since the eight-year open wheel veteran could not shift gears the last four laps of the race, he settled on a 14th place finish instead.

"Wow, what a weekend!” said Junqueira.  “I knew we would be really competitive here, but with damaging the car on Thursday, the guys working all night to build me a new car and then the problems at the end of the race all I can say is I wish we could do this weekend all over.”

Junqueira was fast all weekend even after his chassis sustained a crack in the tub during practice Thursday afternoon.  The Dale Coyne Racing crew stayed until 5:00 a.m. preparing the back-up car.

Mario Moraes’s day did not start like he planned it too as the No. 19 Sonny’s Bar-B-Q car suffered a broken rear toe-link at the start of the race when Graham Rahal tried to make a questionable pass on Moraes.  Rahal’s front tire made contact with Moraes’s rear tire and shuffling the 19-year-old rookie to the back after starting the race a season-best 10th.

The crew took the car behind the wall to make the necessary repairs and promptly got Moraes back into the race and a 20th place finish.

“It was a bit of a frustrating day because we had a podium-finishing car today,” said Moraes.  “Graham tried to over take me and made contact with my rear tire and in the process broke my rear toe-link. The Sonny’s Bar-B-Q crew did a great job fixing the problem and getting me back into the race.”

The IndyCar® Series takes a much-needed weekend off after six straight weekends of racing.  The next race is the Meijer Indy 300 on Saturday, August 9 at the Kentucky Speedway in Carrollton, KY.  The race can be seen live on ESPN 2 at 6:30 p.m. (EDT).
