In a near caution-free race, Dale Coyne Racing driver Mario Moraes notched his third top-ten finish this season, despite having an early spin, as the 19-year-old rookie finished 10th in Sunday’s running of the Peak Antifreeze & Motor Oil Indy Grand Prix at Infineon Raceway.
Moraes ran as high as sixth during the race and finished the race only making two pit stops.
“It was a very good day for us out there,” said Moraes, who started 12th. “We picked up another top-ten finish and were very competitive in the race.”
Teammate Bruno Junqueira, who started 13th, was running sixth with just 10 laps to go when he had to pit for a quick splash of fuel in order to make it to the end of the race. That last pit stop cost Junqueira valuable track position because the cars in front of him had pitted earlier and did not need to stop. The 31-year-old Brazilian dropped down and had to settle for a 17th-place finish Sunday.
“It is not the finish I would have liked to have had,” said Junqueira. “We needed about seven laps of caution to have enough fuel to finish, but we did not get it.”
Junqueira posted the fifth-fastest lap of the race, which saw only one caution flag for four laps during the 80-lap event.
