Rally Mexico: A rally of compromises for Aigner-Wicha

12 marzo 2007

The most pleasant news first: Andreas Aigner/Klaus Wicha got to the finish of Rally Mexico in their battered Mitsubishi EVO IX today – in P11 of the PWRC classification and in P23 overall. What’s less pleasant: Again no points for the Red Bull Rallye Team in the second round of the PWRC.

The second event of the world rally championship for production class cars was an unlucky one for Andreas Aigner right from the start: After an engine failure he was not to blame for on Friday’s SS3, any chance of a top result was already gone. Then, on Saturday, mechanical concerns made fast times impossible at first.

Only when the team management decided to take some more risk nevertheless and increased engine performance, Andreas Aigner was running competitively again; like in today’s final leg, when he once more posted adequate times.

Andreas Aigner: “I have to thank my team of mechanics once again. They really did a great job. I owe it to them that I was able to finish the rally. But what a shame that the spectators here were so undisciplined, ruining my chance of scoring championship points with their stupidity.

Team boss Raimund Baumschlager: “I’ll take two very important insights with me from Mexico. The first one: Our crew has proven its professionalism. The second: One could see even more clearly than in Sweden that the level of performance in the PWRC is incredibly high and that every small mistake gets penalized rigorously.”

The next event for the Red Bull Rallye Team will be Rally Argentinia on the first weekend in May.
