Seat wins the FIA European Touring Car Cup for the second year running

SEAT has won its second consecutive FIA European Touring Car Cup title thanks to Danish pilot Michel Nykjaer and the GR Asia team Seat León.

In front of 10,000 spectators at the Adria circuit in northern Italy, the newly-crowned Danish Touring Car Champion gave Seat and the GR Asia team back-to-back ETCC titles, following Ryan Sharp's victory at Estoril in 2006.  The twisty 2.7km Italian circuit of Adria, near the city of Venice, saw a large grid of 38 cars compete in the third ETCC, with Seat beating BMW, Honda, Chevrolet, Toyota, Audi, Ford, Alfa Romeo, Mercedes and Opel to the title.  Points from two 19 lap races determined the champion.  In the first race, Nykjaer finished second behind Thomas Engstrom (Honda), and therefore started seventh on the grid for the second race, as the top eight finishers from race one started race two in reverse order.

Nykjaer drove brilliantly to carve his way to the front of the pack, overtaking the BMW of Kristian Poulsen in the closing stages to win the second race and clinch the title. Nykjaer’s team-mate, Maurizio Ceresoli, retired from race one when in second place and had to start race two from the back of the grid. The Italian pilot drove brilliantly, setting the fastest lap of race two (1:23.084 / 117.07kph) and taking his Seat León to 9th place. Michel Nykjaer said: “I am very happy, this was the best way to end the season after winning the Danish title. It was hard to overtake Poulsen but I really wanted to win this race and the cup and now I hope that this will help me to get to Macau to compete in the WTCC finale.”

After its successes in Denmark and in the FIA European Touring Car Cup, Seat is now preparing for the final rounds of the FIA World Touring Car Championship in Macau on November 16-18, where the official Seat Sport team will try to win the Drivers’ and Manufacturers' titles.
