JD Motorsport's Chris van der Drift will start tomorrow's Formula Master round 11 from pole position after securing the front running-place, seconds from the end of today's qualifying session.
The New Zealander posted the best time of 1:21.082 on his final lap, demoting Jenzer Motorsport's Fabio Leimer who had looked set to claim the top spot. Unable to improve his time, Leimer will start tomorrow's race from P2 with a best time of 1:21.156.
Trident Racing's Harald Schlegelmilch secured third place with a best lap of 1:21.316, despite limited running during earlier free practices, and will start ahead of German racer Michael Ammermüller whose best time of 1:21.413 earned him fourth place for Iris Project.
JD Motorsport's Sergey Afanasiev followed closely, completing his best lap in 1:21.461, whilst Norbert Siedler was the highest ADM Motorsport driver, qualifying sixth with a time of 1:21.542.
Cram Competition's Marcello Puglisi posted a best time of 1:21.735 and will start tomorrow's race in seventh place with team-mate Arturo Llobell alongside him in eighth thanks to his best lap of 1:21.820.
Germany's Tim Sandtler completed his best lap in 1:21.900, placing him in ninth place for ISR, whilst team-mate Filip Salaquarda completes the top ten with a best time of 1:21.985. Today's top 12 all qualified within one second of pole position.
Eurosport's coverage for Formula Master's race weekend in Germany will begin Saturday 30 August with race one shown live at 12:15 (CET) on Eurosport International and Asia Pacific. Sunday's race two will be broadcast live on Eurosport 2 and Asia Pacific at 14:00 (CET).
Chris van der Drift, JD Motorsport
"I was worried in the second half of qualifying actually as I had quite a few yellow flags! Thankfully I was able to set one last good lap which was good enough for pole. It puts me in the best position for tomorrow's race and now we hope for another strong result."
Fabio Leimer, Jenzer Motorsport "I'm disappointed as I had P1 at the end of the session and then heard on the radio in parc ferme that van der Drift had beaten me at the end. I am a little angry as I made a mistake on my fastest lap and changed up two gears instead of one, which meant I lost some speed on the straight.
"Without this mistake I would have been on pole, but he is P1 now, so we will see what happens tomorrow in the race."
Harald Schlegelmilch, Trident Racing
"Today's qualifying was a challenge. We didn't test this week, alongside the rest of the field, and we had some issues during free practice earlier today so I had less experience than the other drivers going into qualifying.
"After a difficult start, we have had a good end of the day with qualifying in P3. Although I think I could have been faster still. I lost a couple of tenths on one of the last laps and had to overtake Pivoda on my final lap."
